Growing The Farm One Animal At A Time

Well it has been awhile since I have sit down to write a blog. For those who read my blog that may not be aware, Last year at this very time, I moved to a ranch. I thought I was going to build my farm alongside the rancher that I had met. The plan was to get married, so I moved all of my animals and life to his ranch and rented my home out. That turned out to be a disaster on every level.

I spent all last summer at the ranch, my animals did great out at the ranch but as time went on I decided to downsize. I had my goats there, Ms Stripes and her babies. If any of you know anything about goats, you know they can be escape artist. After multiple times of their escapes, I traded my goats for chickens and a pair of Turkeys. The animals and I stayed out at the ranch until around mid-November.

In mid-November I started relocating the backyard farm back to the backyard at my home in town. I made an agreement with my renter that I would discount her rent to put the animals back in their yard and my things I had left, in the garage. I gave her a 30 day notice to move out, I know that sounds harsh, but she had been continually late on her rent and was already looking to move out. I stayed at my daughter’s farm and drove back and forth to take care of my backyard farm.

I spent the Holidays with the kids and moved back to my home Jan 1. I asked my sister to move in with me until she could get on her feet, find her a home in the area, and to help me get on my feet. We made it through the winter and a very harsh winter storm with only the loss of one chicken’s life. Cagney the silkie went broody and it was too much on her little body. Then spring came and a neighbor’s rouge dog broke into my back yard and killed my rooster Brock who was my starter roo of my farm, a few others and my hen Turkey. I was totally devastated. BTW he recently made a new appearance and has been relocated by the family to a safer place where he can’t get out.

Now back to growing the backyard farm…a few weeks ago I had gone to the neighborhood city wide garage sell and a lady said hey do you want a duck? I said oh what kind of duck? They had a drake Muscovy duck, and they did not need two drakes. Well of course I said yes. So Mystery or I call him Mr M came home to live at Cross G Backyard Farms. Another few days went by, and a guy posted a pair of goats available. At the time, it was not in my budget to purchase any more animals. I messaged just to see what he was asking, after talking with him, he just wanted them to have a good home. I drove the next day an hour and half to pick up Neha and Novi. Neha and Novi are brother and sisters. Novi is fixed so he cannot produce babies, so he is a companion for Neha. Novi and Neha are Lamancha goats, which are a milk breed of goats. Since picking up the goats, I have been given 3 more ducks. I am not sure the breed of these ducks, but they are babies and are so cute. Ducks are messy by the way lol I will not even tell you how many more chickens I have brought home.

At this point in the farm life, I do not intend on adding anymore animals to the farm. At least not this farm but stay tuned for future farm life episodes. I do have a chicken coop coming this weekend that will be a huge help.

Well, That is all of the updates I have for you on the farm.

Thanks for reading and keeping up with all of us here at Cross G Backyard Farms
